Why Pressure Damages Shingles, and Soft Washing Doesn't

Asphalt shingles are coated with granules that protect the underlying material from UV exposure. Direct high-pressure water physically dislodges those granules, leaving bald patches that accelerate wear and can shorten your roof's lifespan by years. It can also force water up and under the shingles, creating leaks that don't show up until much later.

Soft washing uses a low-pressure application (closer to garden-hose pressure) of an EPA-registered cleaning solution designed specifically to kill algae, moss, and lichen at the root. The solution does the work over a short dwell time, and a gentle rinse removes the dead organic material — no granule loss, no forced water intrusion.

What to Ask Before You Book Roof Cleaning

• "Are you soft washing or pressure washing the roof?" — soft wash should be the answer, every time
• "What's the PSI you're using on the roof?" — should be low pressure, far below what's used on a driveway
• "What solution are you applying?" — should be a roof-specific algaecide, not a generic all-purpose cleaner
